THE HISTORY OF CSI

In the early 1980’s CSI was formed to utilize existing technology that would provide modern day engineers insight to the original levee structure. There were several parameters or requirement that provided a basis for this search.

The study methodology had to provide a continuous stream of data (every foot of levee is critical to the entire system).
The process had to be benign to the integrity of the levee.
The results had to be repeatable.
The results had to have a positive influence to levee integrity.
Economically, the whole process had to fit the limited budgets of the reclamation districts.

CSI searched for a long time under these constraints. Some of the obvious methods would not work because of the unique soil characteristics of California and the delta. The search criteria ended up with CSI obtaining use of an EM 31 from Geonics Limited. The E-31 allowed CSI to fulfill all of the goals and then some. More than 250 miles of levees were studied in the 1980’s and 1990’s.

In 2004 CSI contracted with Geonics to have the Em 31 retooled into a complete system with even more features for better and more complete levee studies. This included software that would allow precise comparisons with other studies from earlier times. Also GPS information was introduced for exact location definition. Since July 2004 over 150 miles of levees studies have been performed by CSI. Results have been better than expected. Because of the new software and GPS information much of the data has been acted on by the reclamation district engineers.

Through years of studies and countless excavations CSI has learned what certain signals and certain patterns from Em 31 data are and mean. This knowledge has given engineers an appreciated tool.
